In June 1987 AJ jumped from the Eiffel Tower and into the international spotlight - the bungy legend was born.The First Generation- It all started with the people of Vanuatu in the Pacific who have been throwing themselves from huge towers for centuries with nothing more than a few vines tied to their feet. The Second Generation- This ancient ritual inspired the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club to try a few experimental jumps back in the 70's. AJ Hackett saw a video and his imagination took over, teaming up with a fellow speed skier Henry Van Asch they developed bungy into the modern ritual it is today. The Third Generation- After some extensive testing on latex rubber cords a series of extreme jumps were made, first in Tignes, France from a ski area gondola 91 metres above the snow.
Auckland Harbour Bridge Bungy- Auckland is home to the world’s first harbour bridge bungy jump, operated by the bungy originals – AJ Hackett Bungy. This state of the art personal challenge experience is situated directly under the bridge at Pier 2, where jumpers leap over the Waitemata Harbour.
The operation uses the very latest in adventure technology – with a purpose built jump pod and jumper retrieval system to ensure maximum safety and comfort for jumpers. Operating 7 days a week, anybody aged 10 years or over can participate. 0800 GO BUNGY . Auckland Bridge Climb- Auckland Bridge Climb offers an unforgettable 2 ½ hour adventure under, around, up and over the historic Auckland Harbour Bridge!Climbers are provided with state-of-the-art climbsuits, communication equipment, safety harnesses, photographic memories and full commentary provided by experienced and fully trained Climb Operators. Anybody aged 7 years or older can experience this adventure. Specially designed walkways provide a safe, enjoyable and easy going climb while showcasing the incredible sights, sounds and activity of our harbour and city.
